Barcelona 3:1 AC Milan in UEFA Championships League

Barcelona made it through to the knockout stage for the 10th consecutive season as they beat AC Milan 3-1 at the Camp Nou in Group H in what was the eighth meeting of the clubs in just over two years.

Lionel Messi--who had been criticised for three games without a goal scored twice for the Catalans.

Most of the opening 30 minutes were played in Milan's half, but Barcelona failed to create any real danger before Neymar went down under the weight of Ignazio Abate's hand. Messi then blasted his spot kick past Christian Abbiati for his first goal since a 1-1 draw at Milan in the last round.

The hosts took the lead on 29 minutes from the spot after Ignazio Abate was caught on the wrong side of Neymar and the defender brought down the Brazilian with his arm. Messi stepped up to power the ball confidently into the middle of the net.

And 10 minutes later Barcelona doubled their advantage when Sergio Busquets headed home Xavi's free-kick delivery. Messi sealed the three points with a fantastic goal when he played a one-two with substitute Cesc Fabregas before coolly lobbing the ball over the advancing Christian Abbiati.

Milan, meanwhile, can take a few positives back to Italy, where it is trailing badly in the Serie A title chase.

"Barca is always Barca and they showed they were a stronger team tonight. But we played a good game," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "I'm not sure what will happen with my future. We have to win our next league game and there is still much to play for in the Champions League."

It was a typical Barcelona performance, one that ended in a predictable win, but the news was not all bad for Milan. Thanks to Ajax’s win in Amsterdam over Celtic, the Rossoneri maintained second place in Group H, staying one-point clear of the Dutch champions. Win their next two, and Milan’s still going into the knockout round.

Martino was pleased with a win which saw Barca move five points clear at the top of Group H. Their next objective is to make sure of finishing in top spot. Milan has five points, Ajax has four and Celtic is bottom with three.
